What stood out to you from Sunday’s message?

Summary

Read 1 Timothy 4:1-10

After summarizing the mystery of godliness (3:16), Paul now warns of ungodliness. He points to two ways that we can get distracted from the faith: a distorted view of God’s creation and chasing after irreverent, silly myths rather than biblical truth. Rather than fall prey to these distractions the Christian needs to train for godliness in the way an athlete trains for their sport.

Discussion Questions

  1. What are the two (opposite) distorted views of creation that we can fall into? Which is more tempting for you?
  2. What are some of God’s good gifts to us that we can receive with thanksgiving? How do we do that?
  3. Why is it that Christians should be the most grateful of all people? Who would you point to as a Christian who exemplifies this kind of gratitude?
  4. What are all the implications of Paul’s metaphor that godliness comes through a kind of spiritual exercise?
  5. What are things that God is calling you to do to train for godliness? What’s your “exercise plan”?
