The Board of Elders at TAC has enthusiastically endorsed sponsoring a refugee family from Iraq and bringing them to Canada to embark on a new life. A committee has been struck and has already pinpointed a specific family that some of our church members personally met in Jordan last November. Their story is typical of many Iraqi refugees, having fled their home town in the face of threats from ISIS and leaving behind all of their earthly belongings except the clothes on their back. For the past 18 months they have lived as refugees.

Our committee has already submitted all of the official paperwork to the Canadian government for sponsorship and, barring any unforeseen difficulties, we are hoping to have the family with us in a few months. Our legal commitment to participate in this government program is to care for the family for their first year in Canada. This entails not only providing the necessities of life–food, shelter, and clothing–but also helping them integrate into our community, gain proficiency in the English language, and find meaningful employment. The estimated cost will be $36,000–about $100/day.

The good news is that another Canadian Christian charity has offered to come alongside us financially and raise 50% of these costs. However, that still leaves us as a church community needing to raise the other half-$18,000. We are hoping that many in our congregation will participate in this opportunity to tangibly be the hands and feet of Jesus to those in desperate need of hope. Perhaps you might consider sponsoring one day ($100), or a week ($700), or even a month ($3000) to give a displaced refugee family a new life here in Canada.

If you would like to be a part of this meaningful project, you can make your cheque payable to Tsawwassen Alliance Church/Refugee Sponsorship and either drop it off or mail it to our church office–4951 12th Ave, Delta, BC  V4M 2A5.
